Angers 1-2 Lille; Lille Capture Ligue 1 Title
Lille held their nerve to claim a first Ligue 1 title in 10 years with top goalscorer Burak Yilmaz on target in a 2-1 win at Angers which clinched the trophy

A win today would secure the title for Christophe Galtier’s men and they delivered just that as a goal from Jonathan David and a penalty from Burak Yilmaz sealed the deal. It completes a remarkable story. Galtier in 12 years has only managed two clubs AS Saint-Étienne & Lille. He took over the team in 18th place in December during the 2017/2018 season and guided them to safety. The next season, they finished second and qualified for the UEFA Champions League for the first time in seven years. Then they finished fourth in the 2019/2020 half-season. This season they have won the League title, their first in 10 years. What a remarkable job Galtier has done!

The architect who put it all together Luís Campos has left Les Dogues. There are rumors that Galtier will be leaving for Nice. Mike Maignan has reportedly agreed to move to AC Milan. They are in so much debt and have so much boardroom drama to deal with but their accomplishment on the pitch is more noteworthy.

Despite their 0-0 draw with Saint-Étienne last week they showed the mental resilience to win what was a very tight game. Renato Sanches powered through midfield to slip the young Jonathan David through who scored in the 11th minute. The Canadian youngster then won a penalty before half-time which Burak Yilmaz converted. The two strikers are the epitome of the amazing work of Campos. A free agent and a talented kid playing in Belgium but together they have fired Lille to the Ligue 1 title. Renato skied glorious chance later but it did not matter. Despite PSG’s 2-0 win over Brest and Angelo Fulgini’s late consolation goal, Lille marched on to secure their fourth Ligue 1 title.

Congratulations to Christophe Galtier and this wonderful Lille side. What an achievement!!!
