Borussia Dortmund want Niklas Sule on a free transfer when his contract with Bayern Munich expires this summer
Borussia Dortmund want Bayern Munich’s Niklas Sule
According to reports in Germany, Borussia Dortmund are targeting Bayern Munich central defender Niklas Sule when his contract expires this summer. BVB have started laying the groundwork for a deal. The 6ft5 giant of a defender has decided to live the rekordmeister at the end of the season. Bayern Munich have confirmed his decision, but he may stay in the Bundesliga. He had interest from Chelsea, Barcelona, and Newcastle. However, a potential destination is still unknown to the German international defender, who has arguably been Bayern‘s best defender this campaign. Sule has made 158 appearances for Bayern Munich since joining the club from Hoffenheim in 2017. Before that, he made 117 appearances for die Kraichgauer and made his debut under current Bayern boss Julian Nagelsmann. The 26-year-old has also had two long-term injuries, but he has bounced back from them. He is playing some of his best football right now.
Sule is playing so well right now
Sule has won 73% of his aerial duels in the Bundesliga this campaign due to his incredible height advantage. He takes no prisoners when dueling for the ball. He can use his massive frame to great effect. Although, he could use it more effectively in the opposition box. He is secure in possession and progresses the ball phenomenally with passes and carries. Despite worries about his pace, Sule is deceptively quick. He may be easy to turn away from, but he is very quick to react. The Frankfurt-born defender is also one of the best at creating shot actions for teammates from defense despite his conservative passing.
BVB are leaking at the back
BVB will be desperate to bring in a defender of Sule’s caliber this summer. They have conceded 31 goals already this Bundesliga campaign, and Marco Rose will be desperate to lessen that awful figure. Mats Hummels has been dreadful at the back, leaving Gregor Kobel and Manuel Akanji to sort out his mess on multiple occasions. SportBild rejected the reports that BVB are in for Sule. They claim BVB are targeting Nico Schlotterbeck of high-flying Freiburg. They also claim that any deal will cost upwards of €20m. Given BVB’s defensive struggles, it will not be entirely surprising for them to try to sign both men.
