Manchester United close in on Matheus Cunha from Atletico Madrid
Manchester United are close to completing a deal to sign Matheus Cunha from Atletico Madrid, according to talkSPORT.
The Red Devils are set to pay around £50 million to sign the Brazilian striker, and a deal is close to being finalized.
The 23-year-old moved to Madrid from Hertha Berlin only last year. In his sole season in Spain, he scored six goals and assisted five as the club floundered in the league despite being favourites.
It is surprising that United have settled on the underperforming striker. He is talented but has failed to make the step up in Spain. Cunha has only scored up to double-digit league goals once since the start of his career. It was in Switzerland.
This deal falls in line with United’s dreadful dealings that have caused the team to falter on the pitch.
The club is about to pay so much for a player who has not shown that he is worth that amount. And to replace an all-time great player like Cristiano Ronaldo nonetheless.
Cunha’s potential arrival at Manchester United could pave the way for Atlético Madrid to sign Cristiano Ronaldo.
Diego Simeone wants the Portuguese talisman, and this deal could open a way for the move to happen. A deal for Cunha will make him the club’s fourth summer signing after bringing Christian Eriksen, Tyrell Malacia, and Lisandro Martinez.
They are also interested in Chelsea’s Hakim Ziyech, who Erik Ten Hag knows well from their time at Ajax.
