OFFICIAL: Ajax sign Nigerian international Calvin Bassey from Rangers for €22 million plus bonuses
Eredivisie champions Ajax have completed the signing of Nigerian central defender/left-back Calvin Bassey from Rangers on a five-year deal. He will cost the Amsterdam club €22 million plus bonuses and replace Manchester United-bound Lisandro Martinez. Their profiles are similar. They are both left-footed hard-hitting central defenders, but their technique and athleticism allow them to operate at left-back. The 22-year-old has joined up with Ajax’s camp in Austria where he will be assessed by Ajax coach Alfred Schreuder.
Calvin Bassey was influential for the Scottish Premier League Rangers as they reached the Europa League final. His performance in that game put him on the map. Brighton showed some interest, but Ajax have secured his signature. He is now the fifth-most expensive Nigerian player in history and the second-most expensive signing in his new club’s history. He will wear the number 33 shirt for Ajax.
Congratulations on your move Calvin Bassey!
