Women’s Super League players earning as little as 20k pounds a year
Some footballers in the Women’s Super League are earning as little as £20,000 a year and some of the top paid players earn 50 times less than their male colleagues according to a report from The Telegraph.
The investigation involved agents, players, and coaches from across the 12 WSL clubs. It was discovered that salaries range from as little as £20,000 per year to as much as £250,000, plus bonuses. They found out that Birmingham City and Tottenham Hotspur spent the least on employee wages. The average salary of both clubs falls below the national average wage. Birmingham spends less than £19,000, gaining notoriety for substandard payments and poor infrastructure. One agent has even warned that the younger talents in the country were being “priced out of playing professional football” due to the lack of opportunities within the women’s game in England.
Chelsea, Manchester City, and Arsenal pay the best wages with The Blues top of the pile. That is not surprising considering they have some of the best footballers around.
